Jason Hussey Summer 2022
Jason has a B.F.A. from Memorial University, a diploma in textiles and is a certified welder from St. John’s. He has shown work in galleries, public spaces, and his pieces are represented in private collections. Primarily working in sculpture, Jason’s practice also includes photography and installations. Drawing inspiration from the natural environment of Brigus and surrounding areas, the Landfall residency will provide Jason an opportunity to focus on exploring materials and techniques to create new sculptural works.
Sonja Hidas 2019
I am a Canadian artist, my work began with sketches of the land and evolved to abstraction, then community engagement, educational installations and programs related to identity & unity. The theme of identity can be linked to the immigration of my Irish and Hungarian ancestry. My interest in Newfoundland is sparked by the land as a sanctuary for immigrants, its stories of dark and light that are part of the land’s memories. I asked specifically to be located at Landfall Trust, Brigus because of my work’s connection to Rockwell Kent’s landscape sketches and abstractions related to freedom & democracy.
Thayer Carter 2018
Thayer Carter is a painter and printmaker whose work has been inspired by over 30 years of travels throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and South America. His pictures, on paper and canvas, are strongly influenced by early American Modernists, ranging from Lyonel Feininger and Charles Sheeler to Lynd Ward and Rockwell Kent. The landscapes that attract him come from both the natural and built environment and are as diverse in their subject matter as the villagescapes of northern New Mexico, the jungles of Asia and the Caribbean, scenes of urban Europe and the coastline of the North Atlantic. Carter attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and The Arts Students League in New York. His work has been exhibited in New York, Boston, Seattle, Santa Fe and Cuenca, Ecuador, with work published in the United States and Europe. Carter was Head Fabricator for the Exhibitions Division of the Museum of New Mexico for 18 years. He currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Amélie Jérôme 2017
Originally from Quebec, Amélie obtained her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and her MFA in 2014 at York University in Toronto. She has worked as an Exhibitions Coordinator at CIRCA art actuel, an artist-run centre in Montreal, and participated in 8 Group Exhibitions, presented 4 solo exhibitions, including the most recent at the Laroche/Joncas gallery, and has been awarded 5 residencies. Amélie lived in Newfoundland as a child and currently resides in Montreal.
Lillian Cooper 2016
Lillian is a drawing artist and her work focuses on nature and climate change. She has degrees in Architecture and Fine Arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her work is exhibited in Europe and further afield in Canada, the States, Japan and South Korea. Exhibitions have included solo and group shows at Portland Museum of Art, Maine, Missouri State University, USA; Geumgang National Museum, South Korea; Shetland Museum, Scotland UK; Tempus Arti, Belgium; Art Affairs Gallery, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Pamela Allen 2015
Pamela exhibits regularly in both Canada and the U.S. Her work has traveled to Europe, SE Asia, and she participates in working vacations in El Paso Texas, Tucson Arizona, Ventura California, and an artist’s residency in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. Pamela received her B.F.A. from Queens University and is an adjunct instructor in the Fine Arts department. Exhibiting in many national and international quilt art exhibitions, she has won numerous awards for her quilts. Her work has been published in the Quilting Arts Magazine, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, the Canadian Quilters Magazine, and in the recently published Masters: Art Quilt, and 500 Artquilts and Creating with Fabric. In 2012 she was awarded the Teacher of the Year by the International Professional Quilters Association.
Tara Cooper and Terry O’Neill 2014
Tara and Terry work across disciplines from printmaking, animation and photography to documentary filmmaking and sculpture. Employing the strategies of creative non-fiction and meteorology, their most recent study addresses the condition and impact of severe weather. Over the past two summers, the couple participated in two storm-chasing expeditions that were led by world-renowned severe weather expert, Roger Hill. The chase covered more than 6000 kilometres of the Great Plains in search of supercells—rotating storm clouds that are best known for producing anomalies such as baseball-sized hail, tornadoes and flash floods.

Michael McCormack 2013
Michael is an interdisciplinary artist from Halifax. He was the founder of the McCleave Gallery of Fine Art merging with the Suitcase Art Gallery Space Research Institute. He worked as Director of Eyelevel Gallery and representative for the Association of Artist-run Centres from the Atlantic, has co-curated exhibitions throughout Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, and Ireland, and exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries, festivals, and artist-run centres. Sam Douglas 2012
A landscape painter and graduate from the London Royal College of Art, Sam has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin; The Corn Exchange Gallery, Edinburgh and A1C Gallery, St. John’s, Newfoundland. Over the past few years Sam has travelled to various mountain ranges – the Himalayas, Caucasus, Atlas and Picos de Europa- which are reflected in his recent oil paintings. Veselina Tomova 2011
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Veselina graduated from the Academy of Graphic Art and Book Design in Leipzig, Germany. She now lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and is a co-owner of Vis-à-Vis Graphics. Recipient of the Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador 2011 Large Year Award, Tomova divides her time between her graphic design business and her favourite activities, like drawing, painting, printmaking, pottery, illustrating children’s books and walking on St. John’s scenic Battery Cliffs. Veselina is represented by the Red Ochre Gallery in St. John’s.
Christy Georg 2010
From Boston, Christy is an adventurer and accomplished sculptural artist with a broad range of talent. She enjoyed a three-week residency at Landfall and conducted three workshops for local nautical enthusiasts. Christy’s Landfall residency focused on research for an art grant proposal supporting the preservation of the Schooner Ernestina, which sailed out of Brigus under Capt. Bob Bartlett. Brian Hoxha 2009
Brian is an accomplished landscape artist from Toronto, and a graduate from the Ontario School of Fine Arts. He has travelled extensively in Canada and shown his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Most of his paintings are in private and corporate collections. Temma Gentles 2008
Temma has a repertoire of textile techniques including weaving, appliqué, silk screen basketry and beading, and focuses on commissioned textiles for religious environments. With a strong academic and design background, including family traditions, Temma’s textiles have exhibited extensively throughout North America. Her works are found in collections around the world and in numerous publications. During her residency, Temma hosted a textile workshop for children in Brigus.
Gerald Squires 2007, 2008, 2009
Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, appointed to the Order of Canada, recipient of the Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee Award and inducted to the Newfoundland and Labrador Art Council’s Hall of Honor, the late Mr. Squires crafted a full palette. During his residency, Gerald created the limited edition Kent Cottage at Landfall print and gave an illustrated lecture; the proceeds from the print sales continue to support the Trust’s Kent Cottage conservation efforts.
Robert Tombs 2007
An Ottawa-based artist and graphic designer, Robert studied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and received an MFA from the Yale School of Art. He works exclusively with cultural clients such as art galleries and the academic press. His projects have won numerous art, design and printing awards. Robert is currently a professor in the Applied Arts at Algonquin College School of Media+Design. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2008. Sylvia Bendsza 2006
Settling in Newfoundland from Ontario in 1974, Sylvia travels the province extensively during the summer sketching and painting. Known for her paintings, etchings, and lithographs, she has a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Sylvia is represented in private and public collections across Canada and some of her Newfoundland works are found in the Permanent Collection of the Rooms Provincial Gallery. During her residency at Landfall, Sylvia conducted a materials and sketching workshop.

Cecil Day 2006
With an MFA from Washington University, Cecil lives in Nova Scotia, but has spent much of her time in Newfoundland. As a printmaker, Cecil translates her work into quilts, water-colours, papier maché sculptures and fabric banners. Her work is extensively exhibited in solo, group and juried shows across North America, and are in the Permanent Collection at The Rooms Provincial Gallery. During her residency at Landfall, Cecil conducted a linocut workshop focusing on some of Rockwell Kent’s earlier work.

Scott Walden 2005
Author of Places Lost: in Search of Newfoundland’s Resettled Communities, Scott is originally from Ontario but now lives in New York and spends his summers in Newfoundland at Lower Island Cove. He has a PhD in philosophy from the City University of New York and has taught both at Memorial and New York Universities. He was Landfall’s first artist-in-residence and is currently at work on documenting the Newfoundland Railway and the Newfoundland portion of the Trans-Canadian Highway. Scott’s many photographs of Kent Cottage have graced Trust publications.
